Kairi Chanel stands in stark contrast to the current sound dominating hip-hop. It's a refreshing throwback to a time when what you said mattered and expertly encompasses that traditional NY sound.
Lyricism and his respect for the culture and tradition of hip-hop is still front and center but with a modern NY sound and feel that doesn't feel too contrived like it did at times on Paranoia. This is the Dave East I've been waiting for - full of lyrical venom, vivid storytelling, and street wise gravitas, yet still in touch with the times.
We're back and we're discussing recent music news like the Madden Colin Kaepernick controversy, the whole 6ix9ine situation and his subsequent rebrand, Demi Lovato's relapse, and Warped Tour coming to an official end. Also we give our impressions about recent releases from The Internet, Mac Miller, YG, Travis Scott, and more; and specifically discuss if 'Astroworld' is Album of the Year worthy.
We're back catching up about what's new in the art world, discussing whether the "Coachelification" of Art Basel is a good thing, and Baltimore Museum of Art's pledge to purchase art solely from women in 2020. 'Beloved' is solid core NY hip-hop and while it is yet another non-essential collab, more Styles P is always a welcome thing.
'Karma 2' doesn't do much in terms of pushing Dave East's craft forward but it is a very solid project that delivers on that signature gritty NY sound that his core fans expect from him.
Dave East's second album isn't a giant leap forward from his debut but there is much more of an immediacy to his songs that will likely appeal more to a wider audience and it's refreshing to see that bars still matter.
We're finally back and discussing all the major happenings in music like Lil Wayne's long, long-awaited Carter V album, T.I.'s best album since Paper Trail, more unnecessary collabs from the likes of Lil Baby and Gunna, Vic Mensa killing his own career, and Kanye going off the rails (again). Oh and we also throw in some talk about the McGregor vs. Khabib sh*t show and go on a far too long aside about Dragon Ball Super (it happens more than we'd care to admit).
