Best of the Month: August 2017

Best of the Month is decided by a number of different variables; voter counts from preceding posts, reader reaction ratings, gut feelings, and lots and lots of heated discussions.

Album of the Month

Grizzly Bear - Painted RuinsAfter 5 plus years of waiting, Grizzly Bear finally returned with a new album that was well worth the wait. Each member of the group is absolutely sublime in their craft and they still deliver some of the richest and deeply layered compositions in the business. It’s moody, and cinematic, and filled to the brim with hidden nuance and surprises that you’ll only catch after the 4th or 5th listen. It’s a gorgeous album that grows with each listen and one that we’ve had on repeat since it’s release. This one is one of the best releases of the year and an absolute must listen!

Trailer of the Month

Anything coming from the mind of Darren Aronofsky is bound to generate strong reactions from both ends of the spectrum; whether that’d be good or bad. So far, from the early reviews and reactions, mother! looks like it’s yet another one of his films that will illicit strong reactions. When the trailer for the long rumored project with Jennifer Lawrence first dropped, we had no idea what to think; it’s full of flashes of scenes that look like they belong in different movies, no story is revealed, and we have no clear genre in which to put this in. But man was it effective in setting the tone of things to come on September 15th. It’s absolutely dripping with tension, and suspense, and the chilling background music really sent those moments of alluded to violence and horror over the top. Aronofsky is a master at setting tone and he did it once again.

Video of the Month

Oftentimes songs with a message really try to deliver on that message with impactful videos, but they often come up short of their goal. Many times coming off as flat or contrived and losing the message’s potency along the way. Crafting a impactful video full of meaning in the usual 5-7 minute format is a very hard thing to do, but Logic absolutely nailed it with this one. He took extremely difficult subject matter and crafted a short story in the form of a music video that truly hit home and conveyed his song’s message to perfection. No matter if you agree with the message or not, it’s impossible for this one not to pull at your heart strings.
