Atlanta jazz-rock collective Wabi Sabi has been around for a while, as their latest, The Love Insane is their fourth album. So far, the group has built a name for itself through high-energy live shows that relied on tight ensemble playing which was also reflected in their previous offerings.

But, with this album, due to COVID that necessitated different approaches for many artists, vocalist, producer, and band leader Damian Cartier had to do things in another way.

“I was working on a couple of singles when COVID hit, and then I just started programming some new and old songs that I had never properly recorded. Then, one by one, I replaced all the parts with real Wabi Sabi musicians. We have never done an album this way, but COVID mixed with having a spare bedroom home studio seemed like the perfect time to try.”

A new approach and concept always present a possible danger, yet for Cartier and Wabi Sabi, it seems to have worked quite well.

While keeping their psychedelic jazz jam vibe intact, Wabi Sabi added a bit more funky R&B touches to their music and have fitted them almost perfectly within their music. The final result is music that tries and escapes definite categorization and sticks to the ear with such ease.
