Like any other genre, progressive music (not limiting it to the rock tag) had its wild excesses, particularly during its ’70s era, but what has made it alive and ticking to this day is its willingness to explore, combine genres, and not shy away from any form of complexity.
Those following progressive music more closely, or prog, if you will, will probably be familiar with the name of Carl Weingarten, American guitarist, photographer, and founder of Multiphase Records.
Weingarten has been releasing a staggering variety of records for over 40 years now, and he has recently decided to make a 3-CD collection spanning four decades of recording under the title of ‘The Simian River Collection 1980-2020.’
Remaining a true indie artist throughout, these 41 selected tracks showcase all that Weingarten is about – trying to cover as much musical ground as he can while at the same time always giving his music a personal recognizable touch with two distinctive elements intricate guitar stylings and widely diverse arrangements that never stand still or even repeat themselves.
Essentially, even with over three hours of selected music that Weingarten presents here, there is not a dull or excessive moment to be found.
