Iceland has become some sort of a treasure trove of artists who do not always tread the well-beaten musical paths. Some of the names that immediately come to mind are Bjork, Sigur Ros, and composer Ólafur Arnalds.
Another Icelandic artist who doesn’t want to take the usual musical path is Sunna Margrét, a former member of the Icelandic electro-pop ensemble Bloodgroup, who after three previous EPs now comes up with her debut album Finger on Tongue.
And while you can try and make immediate comparisons to both Bjork and her former band, Margrét takes some intriguing detours here that make her album quite personal and specific.
While she works within wide definitions of electro-pop, Margrét seems to take cues from very specific European sources and that is some of the prime movers of Krautrock like Can and Neu!, particularly with some rhythmic patterns she includes within the songs, as well as some not so usual electronics that make her music a good example of how a good experimental pop should sound like, Here, tracks like “Year Itch,” “Figure,” and “Hibiscus” might be prime examples.
Overall, not only is Finger On Tongue an excellent debut, but and a great sign of a talent to watch out for.
