For those who don’t know the Finnish language, ‘Uusikuu,’ the title of the new single by GEA means new moon.

As it turns out, GEA was initially inspired to create this song during Christmas 2020, when GEA and her family were on holiday in Finnish Lapland, on a mountain called Ruka.

One source of inspiration is certainly the specific characteristics and nature of Lapland, but also, as GEA points out herself, the fact that only two percent of the music is produced by women.

Maybe we can also add the fact that currently anything that is labeled as belonging to the trip-hop genre is somehow left on the back burner.

With her obvious trip-hop musical setting and high-pitched vocals, GEA tries to point out the beauty and mystique of the surroundings that initially inspired her but also, if possible, to re-dress the balance in favor of female musicians as well as bring back the focus on trip-hop.

“A brave new life, beautiful and light!” say the lyrics here and GEA adds, “[t]he life of your dreams already exists at the energy level. All you have to do is to bring it into a concrete form through your actions.”

The fact that GEA was invited to virtually perform “Uusikuu” at an Earth Day concert in Osaka on the day when the song was released (April 29, 2022), says that she just might be on a right track.
