We got another truckload of new movie trailers over the past couple of weeks, highlighted by our second look at Sicario 2, which I guess is officially being called Sicario, Day of the Soldado. They show off a lot more of the story and the character motivations and while I love the characters and world of the first, I still can’t help but be concerned by what seems to be like a major sacrifice in suspense and build up in favor of more action. While more visually pleasing and engaging, I’m worried that it’ll lose much of the heart of what made the first one special in the first place. Especially now that’s there’s seemingly no one left that won’t cross any line. While Steven Spielberg is only attached to this one through his production company, The House with a Clock in Its Walls (terrible name) looks to be tapping into that old Spielberg wonder and magic, and directed by Eli Roth nonetheless! An unexpected project for him but with his pedigree in horror he could bring some real bite to this high fantasy children’s tale. The Jackass crew is back! Well sorta…Johnny Knoxville is back in his grandpa suit with his seeming ode to New Jersey’s long defunct and highly dangerous Action Park, titled Action Point. Think Jackass stunts with a real story. Count me in! Many have tried but no one’s been able to capture the magic of their idiotic escapades.
I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again, A24 is the best and most daring studio out there at the moment and they’re back with not one, but four new trailers. They all look damn good, but in particular Under the Silver Lake and First Reformed. The former starring a highly underrated Andrew Garfield in a what looks like a wild, manic story that could see him resurrect his star power. The latter, First Reformed, stars Ethan Hawke (who needs no introductions) and starts out as what seems like a fairly straightforward, dramatic character study. But then…about halfway through the trailer, shit starts to go off into the deep end with a story that goes much deeper and twisted than initially surmised. Needless to say, I’m there for all of it.
