It’s crazy to think about nowadays, but it wasn’t that long ago that it was Iggy Azalea and not Cardi B that was being hyped as the heir apparent to Nicki Minaj. That was before things went horribly wrong and (right or wrong) somehow she became the face of cultural appropriation. All of that aside, she has admittedly always had a good ear for what makes a catchy rap song, which is something that’s still evident on Survive the Summer EP. Like there’s nothing real original about the content here but it is high quality, low quality music, but, it’s not high quality enough to change the narrative surrounding her nor is there any potential ‘Fancies’ in the mix. So yes it’s a bit better than all the other generic, run of the mill, hyper-sexualized rap that floods the airwaves, but it’s nothing that will really leave a lasting impact. And for someone who’s career has almost become a cautionary tale, she needs nothing less than a string of number one hits to regain any sort of relevance.
Uh, she’s salty, I sauté the bitch
Alaïa jacket and I slay the bitch
Big body on display and shit
This is just another day and shit
Was down for love, I got played and shit– “Survive the Summer”
