A24 has a growing history of releasing thought provoking films, and it’s next release, The Zone of Interest, fits snugly into that mold. The Jonathan Glazer directed film is a eerie study of the Holocaust, and A24 has provided us with a new trailer before its wide-release in theaters.
The historical drama is loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis. A co-production between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland, the film centers on Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife as they strive to build a dream life next to the concentration camp. It stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller in the lead roles.
The Zone of Interest premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim, winning the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize. It was named one of the top 5 international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and was selected as the British entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. It was also named the Best Picture of 2023 by the Toronto Film Critics Association.
The Plot
In 1943, Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Höss lives with his wife Hedwig and their five children in an idyllic home next to the camp. Gunshots and shouting are constantly heard, Jewish prisoners are used to do chores around the house, and their belongings are given to the family.
It’s a somber and eerie look at the tragic events of the Holocaust from a perspective we’ve rarely seen.
The Zone of Interest was officially released in the United States on December 15th, 2023, and will be released in the United Kingdom on February 2nd, 2024, by A24, and in Poland on February 9th, 2024 by Gutek Film.
