The most engaging hip-hop music has to have an almost perfect balance between the beats and lyrics that the artist employs. That is particularly the case if the artist(s) involved goes to presenting food for thought to their listeners. Something that is socially or politically engaging.

Of course, as with any other musical genre, such a heady combination has to have very strong sides of the coin – instrumental (in hip-hop’s case, mostly beats or samples part), and lyrical side.

That is exactly what UK-based socially conscious animated musician Faron Sage goes for on his latest single “Heads or Tails.”  Sage goes for the heavy stuff – should we trust the establishment and accept the status quo? He questions our accepted world views and the intentions of authority with lyrics like:

“How do make head or tail of what’s going on when what’s going on is a tale of too many heads going on and on and on.”

Coming on so strong can be quite risky, but instead of preaching his personal solution, Sage doesn’t attempt to answer all the questions it poses but merely asks the listener to think and decide for themselves.

Sage also makes the track work by laying his lyrics over some subtler backgrounds that don’t overpower his message. An artist to watch.

Conclusion
Faron Sage's "Head or Tail" single favors the thought provoking, socially conscious side of hip-hop to good effect.
