With Halloween just around the corner of course there’s been an outpouring of new horror releases and trailers, and the one that’s grabbed me the most has been a relatively unknown one called The Prodigy. The trailer does a great job of building the suspense without giving much of anything away and actually delivers a legit jump scare in the trailer, which is a rarity. Could be a sleeper hit. Keeping with the horror, but more on the ‘thriller’ side, Escape Roomlooks to cash in on its namesake’s craze with a story that gives me heavy Saw vibes – with it’s group dynamics and sadistic life or death puzzles. If they find clever ways to play with the tropes it could be one worth a viewing.
Liam Neeson has essentially become a walking meme thanks to his latter career turn into an action hero, so when I first saw the opening moments of the trailer for Cold Pursuit I thought it’d be yet another slight variation on his now tired Taken formula, and while that’s true for the most part, things start to enter the territory of more dark comedy than straight up action flick with real moments of levity I don’t think we’ve ever seen from the acting vet. A welcome change to say the least. Annapurna is starting to really give A24 a run for their money with some of the more captivating indie/small production films out there. Destroyer looks like it could be a gripping, slow burn of a thriller a la Hell or High Water and its ilk, and Nicole Kidman looks like she could be delivering one of her best, most intense performances yet. At the least, you’ve certainly never seen her like this. It’s really hard to describe what I just witnessed from the Vox Lux trailer, but I know I want to see more. It looks to blend commentary on our obsession with pop culture and celebrities, dark comedy, crime drama, and the surreal. It looks like a wild ride and it’s stunning cinematography puts this one high on my anticipated list.
