Well that didn’t take long, but after finally returning to the scene after so many years, the Gorillaz are back with their second album in as many years, and it’s pretty strong redirection from what was on Humanz. Humanz was a sprawling, featured filled affair that experimented with an almost dizzying amount of different genres and sounds. But whereas that album, at times, felt directionless, The Now Now feels more stripped back, more concise, and definitely more focused. There are some folksy moments on the album but for the most part it all has a heavy funk flavor to it and paired with their smooth synths and soft melodies, it makes for some of their most unassuming and non-threatening music yet. It’s all easy listening perfect for a chill poolside day. While I didn’t think there were any moments that really moved me like on their previous album, as a whole it was much more enjoyable listen with some moments of fantastic grooves.
Calling the world from isolation
‘Cause right now, that’s the ball where we be chained
And if you’re coming back to find me
You’d better have good aim– “Humility”
