Odysseus Lunar Lander Places Music By Earth’s Greatest Musicians on the Moon

Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin…

As Billboard originally reported, music by legendary artists Jimi Hendrix, Bob MarleyJanis JoplinElvis Presley, and many more has been placed on the moon’s surface by the Odysseus lunar lander.

The “arts-centric time capsule” arrived on the moon’s surface on February 22, accompanying the SpaceX-launched lunar lander. Housed in the capsule is a digitized archive of photographs, artwork, music, and more, serving as an overview of human culture.

The report adds that the contents of the “lunar art museum” span millennia – from a Sumerian cuneiform fragment of musical notation and paintings by Rembrandt and Van Gogh, to icons of modern rock and pop history. The capsule is built to stand the test of time for millions of years, if not billions, owing to its structure of nickel, glass, and NanoFiche.

The time capsule’s concept was pitched by Dallas Santana, whose Space Blue company created the project, joining forces with Melody Trust and Beverly Hills Productions.

Santana also explained that music from 1969 and artists who performed at Woodstock are a focal point of the collection for several reasons: Humans took their first steps on the Moon on July 20, 1969; weeks later, 460 000 people ventured to the Woodstock Music Festival at the Summer of Love’s pinnacle, celebrating peace and togetherness, which Santana hopes the capsule will evoke.
