First Full Release of Alice Coltrane’s 1971 Carnegie Hall Concert is Coming Up

Was the first time Coltrane presented a live performance as a leader

Back in 1971, Alice Coltrane, one of the guiding lights of spiritual jazz had an acclaimed concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Now, for the first time, this concert will be released in full through Impulse! label on March 22, 2024.

That concert was the first time Coltrane presented a live performance as a leader, joined by an all-star band comprising Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison, Cecil McBee, Ed Blackwell, Clifford Jarvis, Kumar Kramer, and Tulsi Reynolds. They played four themes: “Journey in Satchidananda” and “Shiva-Loka” (from Journey in Satchidananda) and versions of John Coltrane’s “Africa,” and “Leo.”

Pitchfork notes that the release launches Impulse! and Verve’s “Year of Alice,” which also includes a performance from Ravi Coltrane, Michelle Coltrane, Brandee Younger, and more at Birdland in New York. In 2021, Impulse! released Kirtan: Turiya Sings, a stripped-down version of Coltrane’s 1982 album.

You can pre-order Alice Coltrane – The Carnegie Hall Concert from Roughtrade.
