During the Drop 01 event held on Wednesday, Netflix made an official announcement for the Devil May Cry animated series based on CAPCOM’s famous video game franchise. Producer Adi Shankar, who has previously worked on the horror/thriller series Castlevania, and writer Alex Larsen are the talents behind the series’ scripts as of November 2021.
The first season, consisting of eight episodes, will show the series’ beloved characters like Dante, Vergil, and Lady. Although IGN had previously noted that the production was “reportedly” slated for 2022, an official release date has yet to be confirmed.
Adi Shankar first revealed his acquisition of the series in November 2018 and enthusiastically announced that it would become a part of what he called “the bootleg multiverse,” a nod to his previous success with Castlevania.
Fans of the Devil May Cry franchise may remember the 12-episode anime adaptation by Madhouse that aired in 2007. ADV Films and later Funimation made the series available on home video, while Crunchyroll started streaming the series in June 2017.
The last game in the series, Devil May Cry 5, launched in March 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Later on, it received a special edition tailored for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2020. It was a game that experienced both critical and commercial success, and even won a number of Game of the Year awards.
The enduring popularity of the series has also led to the creation of novels, manga adaptations, and even a unique stage play crossover with “Sengoku Basara.” In March 2019, Tokyo hosted the captivating “Devil May Cry: The Live Hacker” stage production.
This eagerly anticipated show is set to span multiple seasons, and of course it’ll be filled with lots of action!
