Today we’re excited to premiere the new single from Uk-based Ghanian artist, Komla MC. “Save Yourself” is his unique take on “Drill”, which has taken hip-hop by storm in recent years.
Together with his producer Seto, they recognized that there’s huge potential to expand both the musical scope & global audience of the sound and that’s exactly what they try to accomplish with “Save Yourself.”
He uses his unique Ghanaian flow—sprinkled with Pidgin dialect—to maximum effect, underpinned by a melodious hook rooted in African Gospel. The tight flows blending with humor, social consciousness & wordplay, paired with instrumentation that breaks out of norms with a haunting Cor Anglais (possibly a Drill first), make for a truly captivating listen.
“The title is self-explanatory. We’re living in troubled times. There is no savior coming to rescue you. Do what you need to do to save yourselves people! On a lighter note, I’m spitting my battle raps and letting the other rappers know what’s up“ – Komla MC
Komla MC was born in Ghana where he spent most of his childhood, and moved to England in his teenage years. His early exposure to music came from his parents’ extensive and diverse record collection with everything from highlife to disco, funk and even a dash of Kenny Rogers. Then came the explosion of hip hop from across the pond with messages and sounds that he’d never heard before. Beginning in the ’90s Komla’s love of all things hip hop carries right through to the present day with all its new directions.
