Izzy Oram Brown, the Brooklyn-based guitarist (by way of Nashville and Western Mass), is gearing up for the release of her debut album Mess, and we have the privilege of premiering the album’s lead self-titled single.
She has spent plenty of time backing other musicians, studying guitar, deep-diving the musical histories of various places, and working within precise limitations and categories. Now she’s stepping out on her maiden voyage as a songwriter, producer, and arranger.
Oram Brown’s composing starts with the guitar, and in the case of Mess, the compositions are a kind of smoldering post-Americana, equal parts grounded and dreamlike. There is a gravity throughout that wouldn’t be out of place on certain 4AD records circa the early 90s.
Mess is a collection of introspective songs that yield a scalpel at every turn – creating emotional incisions into everyday experiences that open up caverns of deeper meaning. It’s scheduled for release September 23, 2022.
