Hip-hop is one of the musical genres that can get the best out of singles as a medium. It gives hip-hop artists the possibility to accentuate their lyrics, as well as their beats/samples to their fullest and present a certain song (or songs) as a singular theme.

Texas rapper/storyteller J’Moris seems to embrace that idea to the fullest. So far,  in the span of five years, he released one album, six EP’s, and five singles — “Blac Love” and “Ball,” being the latest. Obviously, he works in concepts, with each of his releases covering a specific theme. Blac February (2020), his sole album so far represented an autobiographical 15-track collection.

“Blac Love” concentrates on love, or more precisely, as the artist himself puts it, “as a sincere ode to black women everywhere.” And J’Moris doesn’t hold back either lyrically or with the slow-burning beats/samples he backs them with.

“Ball” works based on its sparse combination of a simple beat, a hypnotic African flute sample, and J’Moris’ rap. But then, it is the simple things that are the hardest to turn out well. J’Moris makes sure they do here.

While you can draw comparisons to many well-known rappers, J’Moris exhibits enough individuality and musical/lyrical capabilities to come up with something that can pique the interest of both hip-hop connoisseurs and those not that familiar with the genre.
