Gospel music, like religion, isn’t for everybody. But when it conveys universal ideas and sentiments rather than focusing on the specifics, like Canyon Worship with their gospel pop-funk album Canyon Worship 2019, it can be enjoyed on a strictly musical level by people from any walk of life.
The album has a refreshing and positive feel to it which comes in a few different forms. On the one hand, you have songs like “Come Up Here” which is permeated by a sense of sweeping grandeur that is carried by the singer’s powerful pipes, a bit like what Mariah Carey’s music would sound like with a gospel twist, while others like “How You Love Me” are funky hits of joyous energy to tap your feet to and start the day with on a positive note.
Overall, Canyon Worship 2019 might not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s certainly not the album of a band who uses religion as a replacement for musical talent and prowess.
