Trailer Roundup 12/10-12/23

True Detective set the world on fire with its 1st season and while the 2nd was a far cry from that first one, and possibly misunderstood, we still have faith in the show as a whole and Season 3 looks to be closer to that opening season than the last as they continue to nail that ominous, skin-crawling suspense alluding to a deep darkness bubbling just beneath the surface, and the casting, as always, is great. Killer Mike has always been an outspoken provocateur both in music and out of it, and he’s finally getting a chance to flex that side of him fully with his own Netflix series, Trigger Warning with Killer Mike. It’s a wonder it took him this long to get his own show but it looks like a must watch that touches on a lot of very sensitive subjects that’s sure to do exactly what it says, and trigger people. I just hope that it’s not all just shock and awe and confrontation and that we get some real resolutions, but I have faith in Mike. Netflix clearly has an unlimited budget as just about every major Hollywood star has worked with them at this point, and now you can add Ben Affleck to that growing list. Triple Frontier looks like an intense, albeit predictable, ride that looks like a (much) more serious Three Kings. And I hope they tap into that vein a bit, because that was an underrated gem.

If there’s one unchangeable fact of life, it’s that Hollywood’s gonna Hollywood, and that means reboots and remakes galore. And they’re back at it again with Hellboy. Sure, the originals were never as big as Spider-Man, or even the X-Men franchises, but they were one of the original comic-book movies done right – thanks in large part to Guillermo Del Toro’s fantastic ability with ‘monster flicks’ and Ron Pearlman’s gruff but endearing personality. Two things that both seem to be lacking in this new remake. It’s only an early look but it’s a confusing one. Are they trying to be a more serious, horror inducing take (like they alluded to), or is Deadpool cosplaying as Hellboy? Only time will tell I guess, but I’m not too psyched about this one. Another pointless ‘soft-reboot’ we got this week was for the next iteration of the MIB series called Men In Black: International. Aside from the obvious increased flashiness and fun toys, and, admittedly chuckle inducing Thor reference, it took all of 2 minutes for me to see that this wasn’t for me. That Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones chemistry will forever be untouchable and I’m just over reboots for the sake of reboots. Meh.

Check out everything I rounded up below and let me know which ones you’re most pumped for.
