If you haven’t heard already, the phenomenal Florence + The Machine just announced their 4th studio album is on the way and dropped off the video for the project’s second single, “Hunger.” It’s another great song that follows in the tradition of what we’ve come to expect from them and their massive voiced lead singer, and the video is equally theatrical and filled with art, symbolism, and lush colors. Jorja Smith takes things in the opposite direction with a stripped down set of visuals for her fantastic song, “Blue Lights.” The video is full of ‘quiet’ moments and shots of people from all walks of life and the melancholic black and white aesthetics perfectly convey the feel of the song itself. Desiigner has officially made his return with the first single, “Priice Tag”, off his debut(?) album, and while it’s no “Panda” and has more than a passing similarity to “Gucci Gang”, the high energy video, which was completely sold by Desiigner, made this one grow on us more than it probably should have. He gets a lot of flack but we find it hard to hate on someone always so full of life and positive energy.
Christina Aguilera is back and like most pop acts trying to make an impact these days, she’s tapped a number of ‘urban’ acts for her first single and coincidentally just in time to tap into all of this Kanye frenzy. He doesn’t actually make an appearance but he is responsible for the production and damn if it isn’t her most compelling single in we don’t know how long. Completely different and fresh from what we’d expect and the video is about as borderline NSFW as it gets without crossing the line. Ok we’re interested. Childish Gambino also makes his return with the first single off his supposedly last (but first major) album. The song and video are about as meta as anything he’s ever put out on Atlanta, and it’s absolutely stuffed full of symbolism and messaging about the current state of America, particularly black America. Honestly it’s the most visually arresting set of visuals we’ve seen since probably Kendrick’s “Humble” video and the song and video serve as further proof as to why he really is in a class all his own.
