For the religiously inclined out there the video for Trippie Redd’s ode to Topanga, of Charles Manson fame not Boy Meets World, will definitely not be for you with it’s more or less satanic visuals and ritualistic imagery. But, it’s hard to deny that “Topanga” is anything less than a banger and highly catchy. Watch at your own risk though. Every time I’m ready to write Tyga off as washed, he always comes back with a smash or two, it’s like L’s just can’t stick to him. And despite how cringe-worthy I still think he is, it’s an impressive trait and he’s done it again with “Dip.” The violin strings really make this song pop and those throwback late-90s/early-00s visuals, complete with shiny puffy attire and all, are something that I didn’t even know I missed, but mannnn those nostalgic vibes are real. Gucci Mane x Kodak Black x Bruno Mars…a combination that didn’t sound plausible on paper but somehow they not only made it happen but it may just be one of the best records out at the moment. They capture the song’s silky smoothness in the video by channeling their inner-motown and it’s as extravagant and over-the-top as you’d expect. The musical combination I never knew I wanted.
2018 has been a crazy year for losses in the music industry, particularly hip-hop, and Lil Peep was one that really hit people hard due to the immense potential he showed as burgeoning star. But despite his untimely passing his music still lives on with a new single and video that gives us a glimpse into the life of the man behind the moniker, with personal childhood drawings brought to life and home video clips. It really pulls on the heartstrings of what could’ve been. Carly Rae Jepsen may forever be known as that “Call Me Maybe” girl and be forever stuck under the immense weight of the song that’s taken on a life of its own but she’s still out there trying to prove that she’s more. However, “Party For One” for however catchy it might be, and it is catchy, still plays in that fairly generic pop lane and doesn’t really show us anything we haven’t already seen or heard before. It is a fun song and video though.
