It hasn’t been a great first month 2017 for new trailers, but there are a lot big movies scheduled for the year so I’m sure things will pick up. Despite the underwhelming selection we did get a massive look at X-23 for the first time in Logan, an official look at the new Power Rangers, an interesting look at LSD pioneers in the documentary The Sunshine Makers, and more. Check them all out below along with my reactions.
Well shit, that really escalated quickly. My excitement went from 1000 to about a trillion. I know I’ve been talking about this one a lot but I can’t iterate enough just how fucking cool it is that we’re getting an Old Man Logan story and the introduction X-23. It has the potential to be one of the best comic book movies yet and a hell of a way for Hugh to hang up the claws. Oh and X-Men comics in a X-Men movie!? Meta AF.
If you grew up in the early 90’s, your childhood continues to get rebooted (and shit all over). I was never a Power Rangers (TMNT ftw!) fan though so I have no feelings about this one. Trailer doesn’t look so bad but I assume the end result will be horrible.
There’s no denying that Jamie Foxx is a talented actor (Ray, Django Unchained), but he has had a lot of garbage movies along with the gold. I feel like this one could be surprisingly good or horribly generic, nothing in between.
The Lost City of Z
Apparently this is based on a true story about some explorers going on the search for El Dorado, or some remnant of it. I don’t know this story but I’m sure things will go predictably wrong. It’s got some solid names attached to it, but it’s got this weird high budget/TV movie feel to it. Could be ok.
I’m a huge Woody Harrelson fan so I’m wholly biased, but I think this could actually be surprisingly funny a la Bad Santa; depending on the scenes they don’t show in the trailer. But realistically it’ll be just as bad as it looks.
Hmm where have I seen this concept done before? Oh yeah, the amazing Bill Murray classic Groundhog’s Day. Now replace all that comedy with teen drama and you’ve got Before I Fall. Hard pass for me.
The Sunshine Makers
Full disclaimer, I don’t know shit about acid (or LSD), have never done acid, and never will do acid. But, this genuinely looks like an interesting documentary about the 70’s and the rise of the American drug counter-culture. That era and the war on drugs always fascinate me so I’ll be giving this one a watch.
