Similar to what I started doing for music videos, I will be doing for new film trailers that have been released. I’ll be giving my reactions to the most talked about new trailers, along with my personal favorites. I’ll be doing these every other week though, as new ones don’t drop as often as music videos. So let’s get right to it.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Talk about milking a franchise. Disney is back again with yet another entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean. This series lost it’s luster with me after the second one, or maybe it was the third, there’s too many to keep up with. I’d be ok with this beating of a dead horse if they even looked like they were attempting to shake the formula up a bit. But sadly this initial trailer looks to be following the same 3 step formula as all the rest. I’ll wait til Netflix.
Alright, I had no idea where this trailer was going but lmao. I can feel the uneasiness from all the way here in France. Especially with the current racial climate in America. But I’d expect nothing less from Jordan Peele (of Key & Peele). He’s shown he can take a typical genre film and flip it on it’s head so I’m definitely interested to see where he goes with this one.
Ever wondered what a serious version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith would look like. Well that’s exactly what came to my mind after watching this trailer. The trailer didn’t make this a must see for me but Pitt and Cotillard are both great actors so I’m mildly interested.
People tend to use the term Oscar bait pretty loosely these days but after watching this trailer that’s exactly the term I’d use for Jackie. I know JFK’s story but I know next to nothing about the First Lady’s, so this could be an interesting watch as it deals with the intimate details of one of America’s darkest moments. Portman is a world class actor (minus Padme), so don’t be surprised when she gets an Oscar nod for this one.
Into the Inferno
When I heard that voice narrating, I knew that I’d be watching this one when it comes out. Werner Herzog is one of the most interesting and influential filmakers of our time, so when he makes something I typically watch. Not entirely sure what this one’s about but I’d guess something about the different volcanoes around the world and the people living around them. Done in typical Herzog fashion of course.
Army of One
Say what you want about Nicolas Cage’s acting (NOT THE BEES!!!), but there’s one thing you can’t deny, he’s entertaining as hell. He’s continuing on his crusade to make the most movies ever and pay off those back taxes along the way. It’s evident that if the money’s right, he’ll do it. Army of One looks to be one of his most eccentric performances yet, which is saying something, as he goes all in on the role of an American going to Pakistan to single-handedly capture Osama Bin Laden. I can tell already it’s gonna be so bad, it’s good.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
We finally get our most significant look at the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Just being honest, I’ll see anything that’s set in this universe, ANYTHING, but at least this one looks good. It looks even better than A Force Awakens as it’s not tied to any trilogies and is completely free to create it’s own unique characters and stories. This will be the last trailer I watch for this movie, I’m ready.
John Wick: Chapter 2
Probably one of the biggest surprise hits from last year, John Wick is back for a second go around. Not sure why Wick is back out of retirement, but who cares. More Gun-fu please! Keanu being a badass is good enough reason for me to watch.
Harry Benson: Shoot First
One of the greatest photographers of all time gets his own documentary. He’s been around some of the most influential people of our time, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, The Beatles, just to name a few, and taken some of their most iconic photographs. There’s sure to be some incredible stories never heard before, so I’ll be checking this one out.
Despite the disappointingly generic film title, The Monster actually looks like a relatively refreshing take on the monster horror genre. The cinematography looks fantastic, I just hope it doesn’t actually show the monster, because we all know after you finally see the monster it’s no longer that suspenseful (I’m looking at you Stranger Things). It’ll be a stream for me.
The Hollow Point
A small town Sheriff gets between large criminal dealings, in this case gun smuggling for the cartel, and things start to escalate exponentially. I know, not the most original of plot lines, but it has the vibe of a new school western and Patrick Wilson is woefully underrated as an actor. So don’t pass on this one too quickly.
I had to mention this one. I’ve never been a Power Rangers fan (TMNT ftw!!!), but I know a lot of people who were. The latest one of our childhood memories is getting the remake treatment and going for that darker, more adult tone that seems to be all the rage these days. Will it be good? Probably not. Will that stop grown ass adults from going to see it? Definitely not.
What’d you guys think about the trailers that dropped these last couple weeks? Which ones are you most excited about seeing? Did I miss any worth mentioning? Let me know in the comments below.
