Back in 1973, Herbie Hancock became the spearhead for what became known as jazz fusion with a band and an album that went under the name and title Head Hunters. The album was a huge success selling over a million copies and becoming a staple for samplers.
The backing band retained the Head Hunters name and has continued to play and release records ever since — sometimes with Hancock, often without, with the lineup shifting a few times.
Now, through Hollywood Bowl, Herbie Hancock has announced the first concert with the original Head Hunters band since 1973. That concert at the Hollywood Bowl itself will be held on August 14, 2024.
Along with Hancock, the band will include saxophonist Bennie Maupin, percussionist Bill Summers, and for the first time since he left the band shortly after the album, drummer Harvey Mason. Bassist Paul Jackson died in 2021, so Marcus Miller, a longtime Hancock collaborator, will stand in for him.
