A24 are easily the best production company around at the moment (a fact I’ve stated multiple times on this site) and they look like they’ve got yet another winner on their hands with Mid90s. Not only does it look like a perfect ode to the ’90s, the youth at the time, and the rising skate culture, but it’s written and directed by Jonah Hill. Love that washed out, VHS quality aesthetic and the soundtrack sounds phenomenal. Following up Moonlight was always going to be an almost impossible task, but Barry Jenkins definitely didn’t choose the easy route with trying to adapt James Balwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, but if anyone could do it, it’d be him. It looks like another intense, drama-soaked ride that could have Oscars written all over it. America has always been intrigued with the violent true crime story of Lizzie Borden and now it looks like we’ll be getting our first real good film adaptation of what has been supposed to have happened, and the trailer for Lizzie is appropriately eerie and creepy with the promise of unspeakable violence waiting just around the corner.
RZA’s foray into film hasn’t been the most spectacular but he looks like he has a real winner on his hands with Cut Throat City– a great cast, great setting, and compelling story. Could be the one to really catapult his name in film to new heights. And at least we’ll get a dope soundtrack out of the process. After having some serious questions after our first look at the upcoming Venom movie, we feel slightly more confident after getting this second look and we could be getting our first true to character representation of the alien symbiote on film. He looks badass to say the least (even without the spider emblem), and though it doesn’t seem ‘scary’ like they’ve been selling it to be, he is menacing as hell and darkly comical.
