First thing that popped into my mind after running throughย Superorganismโs self-titled debut was, โyup, thatโs about right.โ If you ever saw a picture of the group then gave their album a listen, youโd know what I mean. Their music is about as youthful, happy, and oddball as Iโd expect from a group clearly born of the internet age and with a name like Superorganism. It all sounds ready made for the latest wave of indie, coming of age summer films with their exuberant use of happy synths, random nature sounds and asides, and just overall cheery demeanor. All of that might sound like a negative swipe at their music, but in fact itโs quite the opposite. Their music has an almost infectious quality to it that you canโt help but vibe to. Itโs definitely one of the most inventive albums Iโve heard in a while and they clearly speak directly to this generation of teens.
Little Dark Age is full of MGMT's clear reverence for '80s pop and rock - with all of the vintage synths, dub effects, and just overall aesthetic feel, but with their own decidedly psychedelic twists thrown in for good measure. They create an interesting dichotomy of warm, buzzing production and darker, more cynical lyrics and the result is a largely pleasing listen from start to finish that contains some of their most infectious work in years.
I'm not sure if WhoMadeWho was aided by any psychedelics in the creation ofย Through The Walls but he managed to craft one atmospheric, contemplative, trippy musical journey, and I can dig it.
Fever Ray's sound is not easily quantifiable nor is it's intent, it's quintessential mood music and just one of those things where you just know it when you hear it. I'm not sure that I enjoyedย Plungeย as much as her first album, at least not immediately, but there's no denying the sheer creativity and boundary pushing present that succeeds at evoking emotional response better than almost anything else that comes to mind.
โFeeling like a boss, and
Staring at the stars, it
Doesnโt matter the cost, cause
Everybody wants to be famousโ
