Dwayne Johnson Transforms into MMA Legend Mark Kerr in ‘The Smashing Machine’ Trailer

A24 has unveiled the first trailer for The Smashing Machine, a gripping biographical drama starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as MMA icon Mark Kerr. Set to premiere in theaters on October 3, 2025, the film marks a significant departure from Johnson’s typical roles, showcasing his transformation into the troubled fighter known for his dominance in the early days of the UFC.

A Transformative Performance

Directed and written by Benny Safdie, known for Uncut Gems, the film delves into Kerr’s rise as a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and his battles with addiction and personal demons. The trailer reveals Johnson’s dramatic physical transformation, complete with prosthetics and a wig, rendering him nearly unrecognizable as he embodies Kerr’s tumultuous journey.

A Stellar Supporting Cast

Emily Blunt co-stars as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s then-wife, bringing depth to the narrative of love and struggle. The film also features appearances by real-life fighters Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, and Oleksandr Usyk, adding authenticity to the portrayal of the MMA world.

Filmed across locations including New Mexico, Tokyo, and Vancouver, The Smashing Machine was shot on 16mm film, lending a gritty realism to the storytelling. Johnson, who also serves as a producer, sustained a real elbow injury during filming, underscoring the physical demands of the role.

Based on the 2002 HBO documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, the film offers an unflinching look at the highs and lows of Kerr’s career, exploring themes of success, addiction, and redemption.
