Sonically and melodically The Wombat's latest album is a beautiful record who's bubbling upbeatness is infectious which creates an interesting dynamic between it's content full of heartbreak and a bad love. This may not be one of the deepest nor thought provoking rock albums I've heard in recent memory but it's certainly one of the most enjoyable. And sometimes that's what it's all about.

Skyzoo dropped off a fully realized project that's a complete celebration of blackness, fatherhood, and community; and while it's overall tale is a small, personal affair, the way he paints the picture makes it feel like a much grander journey and by the ending's heartfelt revelation I found myself fully invested. Add to that an ridiculous pen full of rewind worthy gems and phenomenal production makes this a top tier hip-hop album that must be heard.
Jaron Lamar Davis' debut album is smooth and crisp and left me with a much deeper appreciation for all the nuances of jazz as a genre and it's an album I find myself throwing on often to really unwind. The drumming doesn't always take center stage but when it does it's exceptional.

Friend and frequent collaborator, Jaron Lamar Davis, has just released his fully self-produced debut album and it’s 8-tracks of eclectic alternative electric jazz hip-hop goodness that has our nod of approval. It’s a project that deserves to be heard and if you love real artistry we think you should support real artistry.
January had a ton of great new albums and music videos from the likes of James Blake, Ty Segall, JAY-Z, and Django Django; and it also featured some interesting trailers for Ant-Man and the Wasp, The China Hustle, and The Death of Stalin. We've highlighted some of the best drops over the month and now we're ready to crown the best album, movie trailer, and music video.

Things just seem to gel better with Brown's more traditional boom-bap and sample heavy sounds as Ghostface Killah's sinister lyrics glide more effortlessly than before and the dark tales have decidedly more pop. The end result may be less ambitious than Younge's previous effort but it is a better match and a smoother listen.
While Django Django's previous efforts felt a bit more artsy in intention, the experimentation on Marble Skies feels done with the sole purpose of creating something fun. And it is fun, it's a lighthearted, head nodding romp full of brilliant melodies and earworm hooks. It's almost impossible not to be pulled into their joyous orbit.

AWOLNATION's latest is probably the most pure rock and roll I've heard from them. No autotune, minimal electronics, just good clean playing, and I gotta say even though it's a drastic shift in sound for them, I enjoyed it. Here Come The Runts explores traditional rock's many faces but their sound is still passionate, high-energy music full of big intense vocals and anthem-like hooks.
There are a few moments here and there, and his one true country collab is the best song on the album ("Say Something"), but overall Man of the Woods is Justin Timberlake's worst project yet. He tried to blend the best of both worlds of pop and country but the result is something that doesn't do either particularly well.

Shit gets real in this episode as we speak to Marvin Touré about his upcoming art work, the influences of his West African heritage and being a first-generation immigrant, and his cautious optimism about Marvel's upcoming Black Panther film. We also dive deep into an artist's struggle to convey his own life and perspective while still leaving room for interpretation from a larger audience, untraining your mind after years of traditional schooling, the themes of the racial undertones of body perception, mental conditioning, and the mentality towards art in West Africa compared to the traditional Western context. Needless to say we dive deep.
I'm not sure if WhoMadeWho was aided by any psychedelics in the creation of Through The Walls but he managed to craft one atmospheric, contemplative, trippy musical journey, and I can dig it.
My general feeling after listening to the Migos' latest was that I heard this all before from them, and much better. Whereas Culture felt fresh and radical in it's trendsetting ways, Culture II feels regressive and safe. This time they're going to have a hard time distinguishing themselves from the many clones they've spawned over the years.
Ty Segall pulls out the full arsenal on Freedom's Goblin delivering a 19-track ride that goes all over the place. In lesser hands it might feel disjointed or convoluted but with him it just shows how truly gifted he is and just how in tune he is with the craft of rock. He clearly marches to the sound of his own beat and it's incredibly exhilarating. Freedom's Goblin is one hell of a ride and further proof that he may just be a mad musical genius.
