Yoshitoshi Shinomiya’s Debut Anime Film ‘A New Dawn’ Reveals Cast and Visually Stunning Teaser

Starring Riku Hagiwara and Kotone Furukawa as the leads

The X (formerly Twitter) account for Yoshitoshi Shinomiya’s debut feature anime film A New Dawn revealed exciting updates on Wednesday, including its Japanese title, teaser trailer, key visual, and main cast. The film, titled Hana Rokushō ga Akeru Hi Ni (On the Day the Emerald Fireworks Light Up), is shaping up to be a unique blend of artistry and storytelling.

The film stars Riku Hagiwara (My Beautiful Man, Den’ei Shōjo Video Girl Mai 2019) as Keitarō Tatewaki and Kotone Furukawa (Yu Yu Hakusho, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy) as Kaoru Shikimori. Remarkably, this marks the voice acting debuts for both actors.

The Story

The story revolves around a 330-year-old fireworks factory facing eviction. Keitarō, who has spent four years secluded in the factory, works to perfect the legendary “Shuhari” firework in place of his absent father. His childhood friend Kaoru, now living in Tokyo after a mysterious incident, returns to visit him. Together, they embark on a surprising plan to uncover the secrets of a long-lost firework. The title references “Hana Rokushō,” a pigment once used in fireworks, and the word “Akeru,” which signifies dawn or daybreak.

Production

Yoshitoshi Shinomiya not only directs but also conceived the story and wrote the script. Other notable contributors include:

  • Utsushita (Heavenly Delusion) as the character designer.
  • Akiko Majima (Suzume) as an artist.
  • Shūta Hasunuma as the composer.

Previously announced for release in 2025, the film is a joint production between Japan’s ASMIK Ace and France’s Miyu Productions (Ghost Cat Anzu).

A New Dawn was showcased at the Annecy International Film Festival’s “Animation Day” on May 19. The event featured a behind-the-scenes video and Shinomiya’s introduction to the film, drawing international attention to this ambitious project.
