My Melody and Kuromi is Getting a Stop-Motion Anime Adaptation on Netflix

Being produced by WIT Studio’s stop-motion department, TORUKU

Netflix Japan has some exciting news for fans of Sanrio’s beloved characters! A new stop-motion animation series starring My Melody and Kuromi is officially in the works and is set to premiere this July. It’s a perfect way to celebrate two big milestones this year—My Melody turns 50, and Kuromi marks her 20th anniversary.

The show will take place in Maryland, the charming world where My Melody and Kuromi live. Fans can look forward to a heartwarming story that brings these iconic characters to life like never before. Leading the project is Tomoki Misato, the creative mind behind the adorable Pui Pui Molcar stop-motion series. The animation is being produced by WIT Studio’s stop-motion department, TORUKU, and Shūko Nemoto is penning the scripts.

Sanrio has had great success with these characters in the past. The original Onegai My Melody anime premiered in 2005 and was so popular that it spawned multiple sequel series like Kuru Kuru Shuffle! (2006), Sukkiri (2007), and Kirara (2008). There was even a feature film titled Onegai My Melody Yū & Ai, which hit theaters in 2012.

Meanwhile, Kuromi has also been making waves. Earlier this year, Kuromi’s Pretty Journey, a short anime series, premiered its first episodes on YouTube and TikTok in February. Fans loved it, and Sanrio rolled out three new episodes every Friday, ending up with 21 episodes in total. By July, the anime became available in English for even more fans to enjoy.

With My Melody and Kuromi getting the spotlight on Netflix this summer, it’s safe to say Sanrio fans have plenty to look forward to. Will you be checking this one out?
