Evergreen Review was an iconic publication that ran from 1957 to 1973, that served as inspiration to many rock stars, from The Doors, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and The Velvet Underground to Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell, and Jim Carroll, among others.

Historian Pat Thomas, who edited the book, interviewed 1960s era Evergreen staffers to get the inside scoop on the day-to-day operation of the magazine, plus gathered new essays looking back on this golden era by John Oakes, Loren Glass, Kasia Boddy, Dale Peck, Ethan Persoff, Ken Jordan, and Stanley Gontarski.

The magazine was originally set up by Grove Press editor Barney Rosset, starting with “San Francisco Scene” issue (1957) that spearheaded the Beat Generation as a nationwide literary movement, featuring Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, Philip Whalen, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg.

Over the next few years, Albert Camus, Frank O’Hara, William Carlos Williams, Samuel Beckett, Terry Southern, Jean-Paul Sartre, Larry Rivers, Julian Beck, Norman Mailer, Antonin Artaud, Günter Grass, Richard Brautigan, Chester Himes, Nat Hentoff, along with others would appear in the Evergreen Review.
