Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Alas de Liona returns with a captivating new music video for “The Alchemist’s Son,” the emotional centerpiece from her critically-acclaimed album Gravity Of Gold released last year.
The piano-driven track showcases Alas at her most vulnerable, a delicately crafted ballad on dreams, sacrifice and the painful beauty of pursuing one’s passion regardless of the cost. Once again directed by Alas herself, the accompanying video continues her visual storytelling journey from some of her previous 2024 releases, the heartfelt “Vine Song” and haunting “For Forever,” this time setting the narrative against the breathtaking backdrop of Ferniehirst Castle near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. This 15th Century fortress, known as ‘Scotland’s Frontier Fortress’ and ancestral seat of Clan Kerr, proved to be an appropriate setting with its stone walls having witnessed centuries of border warfare, mirroring the single’s themes of overcoming hardship.
Alas de Liona: “This is the culmination of my album – a gentle, pensive but emotional ballad about being in love with a goal or dream and whether the cost of such a pursuit is worth the sacrifices.”
Born in California and raised in the Mojave Desert, Alas de Liona came to the UK to complete a university course and has since made a life changing move from the USA to live full-time in Scotland. In 2020 she took her artistry to a new level and recorded the Radio Astronomy EP, releasing it the following year. A project which also allowed the singer to explore her creativity through five distinctively produced music videos.
