Manchester’s Maruja Drop Off Incendiary New Rap/Rock Track “Trenches”

Manchester’s Maruja has released “Trenches” off their just released debut album Pain to Power. Produced by Samuel W. Jones, the record is a thundering call for change, solidarity and love in deeply troubling times, the track directly quotes the words of revolutionary socialist and activist Fred Hampton: “there will be no revolution ‘til the people believe that they are revolutionary”.

A high-octane single that builds before it detonates, “Trenches” captures the anger of “a generation unheard and their desire for change,” says the band. Sonically, it finds Maruja blurring the lines between hip-hop and dissonant post-rock; while lyrically, it’s “a reminder to the listener that they are not what this culture teaches,” adds the band. “They are, in fact, powerful beyond measure and when they believe in themselves, can make a difference. The song is a call for revolution in the face of the oppressive.

In support of Pain to Power, Maruja will embark on a North American tour this fall on the heels of their sold-out debut run here this past spring. Kicking off on September 22nd in Boston and running through October 5th in the US and Canada, the band will then head out on their biggest headline tour of the UK and Europe to date later this autumn. They will also play a run of exclusive shows for Rough Trade and Crash Records in London, Manchester, Nottingham and Leeds.
