Buzzing indie artist San Gabriel returns to share their upcoming album’s lead single “Running Out of Time” and its accompanying live music video.
On the song, the band’s James Bookert says:
“Running Out of Time” was written and recorded in an east Austin Texas Liquor store. When my former band Whiskey Shivers’ summer tour was cancelled by the pandemic, I found myself at a crossroad. Continue playing with Whiskey Shivers, a well-oiled touring machine that had been at it for nearly a decade, or face the uncertainty of fully committing to my efforts as San Gabriel.
After a string of seizures that led me to a seizure disorder diagnosis, waking up in a hospital bed surrounded by my family, it became abundantly clear to me how short life is. I’d always wanted to pursue my own music, and it was at that moment I made the decision to fully commit myself to that path.
In short, ‘Running Out of Time’ is my coming to realize that life is short, and that I want to fill my time with things that fulfill me as a person.
San Gabriel is the solo project of James Bookert, known for his past work with Whiskey Shivers, and collaborations with artists like Harvey Mason Jr., Ester Dean, Trinidad James, DJ Khaled, and Anna Kendrick on the Pitch Perfect 3 soundtrack. After stepping away from Whiskey Shivers and enduring personal health challenges, Bookert began recording the deeply personal debut album —written and produced entirely during off-hours while working at a liquor store in East Austin.
Affectionately named after his shifts in the liquor store, San Gabriel’s debut record, Nights and Weekends, is a collection of synth forward optimistically melancholic songs, chronicling Bookert’s tackling of lost love, grief, and grappling with an uncertain future both musically and professionally.
