In a surprising development, drummer Josh Freese has announced his departure from the Foo Fighters. Freese, who joined the band in 2023 following the tragic passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, revealed on May 16, 2025, that the band informed him they were “going in a different direction” without providing further details.
Expressing his feelings on social media, Freese stated, “I’m not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed.” He added, “In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band.” Despite the unexpected news, Freese conveyed his support for the band’s decision and gratitude for the time spent with them.
Freese’s tenure with the Foo Fighters included extensive touring in support of their 2023 album But Here We Are. His final performance with the band was a private event at the House of Blues in Anaheim in September 2024. The band has yet to announce a replacement drummer for their upcoming engagements, including a scheduled performance at the Singapore Grand Prix on October 4, 2025.
Known for his versatility and extensive session work, Freese has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Nine Inch Nails, Devo, and A Perfect Circle. He has since rejoined A Perfect Circle for their 2024 tour, continuing his dynamic career in the music industry.
As the Foo Fighters navigate this transition, fans await further announcements regarding the band’s lineup and future projects.
