San Francisco queer emo pop band gloomy june share their latest single “kill You” + video, off their just released debut LP.
For gloomy june’s lyricist Alexi Belchere, the song “kill you” is about the musician’s journey as it exists today – a creative dystopia where you put your life on display onsocial media, existing as more of a brand than a person, and where each song you release is “another chance to try again (and) fill the void” in hopes that someone might dance.
“But you still do it because you have the drive to connect with people through music,” Belchere
adds. “I feel this push and pull of desire to connect with other people, against this feeling of performing a persona and fears of being inauthentic.”
The music video features the members of gloomy june living out their daily lives- playing video games, practicing their instruments- all the while another camera angle surveilles their every moment. The video turns the viewer into a voyeur, the song volunteering your life to be observed.
