Philadelphia cult favorites Nyxy Nyx are excited to share “Ashtray,” the latest preview of their first proper studio record, Cult Classics Vol. 1, due out September 12, 2025, via Julia’s War Recordings. It’s an intensely noisy track that insulates contemplative lyricism in layers of fuzzed-out guitars. The almost six-minute-long song breaks down into a cacophony of noise, before melting into an interlude of silence, a hurricane of riffs, and then a calming array of instrumentals.
Last month, the band announced the incoming record with world-tilting lead single “in haze” acting as a first taste for what the band has in store—the song twinkles and trudges on slowly through drones of guitar and delicate ripples of melancholy vocals.
A prolific member of the Philly DIY scene, Nyxy Nyx began in 2014 as a performance art project, slowly morphing into a legendary scene go-to and gaining a cult following along the East Coast. Earlier this year, they shared a standalone single, “the cauldron” and full-length project Real Life, adding to their ever-changing, eclectic discography.
Luv, pain, the profound, the mundane: Nyxy Nyx is for the dreamers and true believers. Down the rabbit hole, caught in a snare, the project’s cyclical riffs and self-references blur the lines of time and reality, backing listeners into a deja vu box-trap of uncanny melodies and foggy-eyed double takes.
Known for their temporality, the Philly-based outfit have spent years manipulating their degenerative discography. Tracklistings shift, masters are swapped, and songs are re-recorded. In many cases, a release is solely accessible by those with a download or physical copy. For the first time ever, Nyxy Nyx will commit to contract-backed perpetuity. Cult Classics Vol. 1 is out via Julia’s War Recordings on September 12, 2025.
