Animal Scream Long for a Meditative Escape from the Gloom On New EP ‘Otherworldly Pictures’

Tapping into common anxieties and existential dread

Animal Scream dare you to enter their mysterious, yet sonically blissful dimension otherwise known as Otherworldly Pictures. Available now on most streaming platforms, the new EP is the latest from American Hermitage.

Containing six exuberant, yet sinister tracks that will transport you to utopia, Otherworldly Pictures is great for fans of psychedelic rock. Tapping into common anxieties, the tracks take you to a unique atmosphere that’s reminiscent of early Beach House. Featuring six tracks recorded in Chad Monticue, (the band’s fearless leader)’s home studio during 2023 and 2024, the new EP is a strong testament towards what it feels like to be alive in the 21st century.

Exploring relationships, topical issues from love to war, and the unavoidable feelings of existential dread, Otherworldly Pictures is a culmination of life’s gnarliest feelings, wrapped in an indie bouquet. Ultimately, the new EP offers prime escapism to those searching for a cathartic relief. Fusing together chopped up vocal samples with dreamy synths and guitars soaked in reverb, Animal Scream exists in a sonic world where Youth Lagoon and Tame Impala have a lovechild.

Animal Scream are Pittsburgh Doom Pop artists founded by Chad Monticue & Josh Sickels, joined by multi-instrumentalist Caleb Pogyor. The band combines sound design with a psych-pop psychedelia that’s dark and cinematic, a noir-tinted sound in thrall to the eternal groove. Influences vary from David Lynch, MF DOOM, and ’60s reggae to woozy film scores carving out nocturnal soundscapes for the alienated and brokenhearted.

Decadently mixing supernatural and sci-fi elements with more straightforward pop tones, the duo creates earworms that are tender and ominous, yet also emotionally devastating at their core.
