Alt-Pop Duo Joan Are Back with Their Sublime New Single “Space”

Beloved alt-pop duo joan—Alan Benjamin Thomas and Steven Rutherford—are back with their latest single, “space,” an effortlessly dreamy and ethereal ballad.

“This is a love song not just about someone, but about the space and energy they have around them when they’re near. There’s something extremely powerful about the non-physical aspects of love, and this song is trying to capture that,” shares joan. “This song is a love letter to someone to show them how much better of a person they make us: ‘Call it a dream, I see you in my sleep / Call me your moon, I revolve around you / Call me insane, I’m in love with your space.’ This song is part of the endless search to try to put into words how much they mean to us. Our album is called this won’t last forever, and this song is trying to take advantage of this moment to tell that person those feelings.”

The release of “space” follows joan’s previous single “lucid dreaming” and previously released “alibi,” which made major waves in the streaming world. They additionally are featured on K-pop group EPEX’s single so nice, which the duo also wrote and produced. Earlier this summer, joan wrapped a string of tour dates with Bloc Party which followed their spring headline run, “the close friends tour.”

With the recent release of their highl-anticipated album this won’t last forever, joan are carving out a unique lane in the alternative pop scene.
