Bob Mould is remembered both as a part of the incredible songwriting and singing duo in Husker Du, and then as the founder of Sugar, another great trio that became alt faves during the ’90s. Now, through the band’s website, all three original members – Mould, David Barbe and Malcolm Travis announced that they are getting back together, both with new recorded music and upcoming concerts.
As Mould noted, “I spent all of 1991 writing and performing new material at solo shows. David and Malcolm had never met but I was certain we three would work well together. After weeks of rehearsal in early 1992, we spent three months recording Copper Blue and Beaster. By summer 1992, the musical climate was perfect for what we created. No one could have predicted the results. We held onto the wheel and did our best to enjoy the wild ride. SUGAR was part of a pivotal era in popular music, and a special time in my life.”
A newly recorded song is already online, and the first new shows are slated for May 2026 – in NYC (Webster Hall on May 2 & 3) and London (O2 Forum Kentish Town on May 23 & 24).
In early 1992, Mould, Barbe and Travis rehearsed thirty songs in the back of a tire shop in downtown Athens, Georgia. The band was named in a Waffle House restaurant in Athens, when Mould spotted a sugar packet on the table where he and the other two band members were sitting. Their first concert was on February 20, 1992, at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia.
The band played their final show in Sendai, Japan in January 1995. Barbe wished to spend more time with his growing family. Travis took over the drumming slot in Kustomized. Mould continued performing as a solo artist.
