Your 2000s DVD Collection May Have “Disc Rot”, and Warner Bros. Knows It

Warner Bros. is offering replacements, with a catch

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is addressing a significant “disc rot” issue affecting DVDs manufactured between 2006 and 2008. Numerous consumers have reported that these discs have become unplayable due to this phenomenon, where the disc’s layers deteriorate over time.

Disc rot refers to the chemical degradation of optical discs, leading to data loss and playback issues. Causes include oxidation of the reflective layer, reactions with contaminants, ultraviolet light damage, and de-bonding of the adhesive used to bond the disc layers.

Warner Bros. has acknowledged the problem and is actively working with consumers to replace defective discs. When possible, replacements are provided for the same title. However, if a title is no longer in print or if rights have expired, they’ll offer exchanges for titles of similar value.

Reports indicate that virtually every Warner Bros. DVD manufactured during this period may be susceptible to disc rot, rendering them unplayable.

Consumers experiencing issues with their WB DVDs from 2006 to 2008 are advised to contact the company’s customer support for assistance. This development underscores the importance of regularly checking physical media collections and considering digital backups to preserve content.
