Warner Bros. Animation and Mexican studio Ánima have unveiled the trailer for Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, an animated reimagining of the iconic DC superhero set amidst the turmoil of 16th-century Mexico. The film premiered at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 and is set to release in Mexican cinemas on September 18, followed by a global streaming debut on HBO Max on September 19.
What the Trailer Reveals
A Hero Forged by Tragedy
Viewers meet Yohualli Coatl, whose father is killed by Spanish conquistadors. Consumed by grief and duty, he assumes the mantle of Aztec Batman to defend Tenochtitlan and exact vengeance on Hernán Cortés—who is portrayed as a Two-Face figure scarred after a battle with Aztec Catwoman.
Mythic Setting & Visual Style
The trailer blends Aztec mythology with Batman lore, envisioning the Aztec capital as a gothic city bathed in moonlight and fire. It presents richly symbolic visuals—from bat gods to temple lairs—and introduces cultural versions of familiar characters like the Joker, Poison Ivy, and Alfred.
Cast, Production & Creative Vision
In Spanish, Horacio García Rojas voices Yohualli/Batman; Omar Chaparro is Yoka (Joker); and Álvaro Morte plays Cortés/Two-Face. Jay Hernandez lends his voice for the English dub.
Directed and co-written by Juan Meza‑León, with writing by Ernie Altbacker, the film is a Mexico–U.S. collaboration that leans deeply into Aztec cultural authenticity. A cultural consultant helped ensure respectful, researched representation.
The trailer ignited discussions regarding historical portrayal—some critics argue it risks perpetuating the “Black Legend” by portraying Spaniards as uniquely brutal conquerors. Others emphasize the importance of context in portraying colonial histories.
