Sydney Sweeney and Halsey Star in ‘Americana’, a High-Stakes Neo-Western Adventure

Lionsgate has released the official trailer for Americana, a modern-day Western crime thriller directed by Tony Tost in his feature debut. Set to hit theaters on August 22, 2025, the film features an ensemble cast led by Sydney Sweeney and pop star Halsey, promising a gritty tale of ambition, betrayal, and redemption in the American heartland.

A High-Stakes Quest for a Sacred Artifact

Americana centers on Penny Jo Poplin (Sydney Sweeney), a small-town waitress with dreams of becoming a country singer. Her aspirations take a dangerous turn when she becomes entangled in the pursuit of a stolen Lakota “ghost shirt,” a sacred Native American artifact valued at half a million dollars.

The artifact’s appearance on the black market sets off a chain reaction, drawing in a diverse group of characters: a lovelorn war veteran (Paul Walter Hauser), a corrupt antiquities dealer (Simon Rex), a ruthless criminal (Eric Dane), and an Indigenous leader (Zahn McClarnon) determined to reclaim his people’s heritage. Halsey portrays Mandy Starr, a woman fleeing a mysterious past, adding another layer of intrigue to the narrative.

A Blend of Genres and Influences

Director Tony Tost, known for his work on the Peacock series Poker Face, brings a unique vision to Americana, blending elements of crime, drama, and dark comedy. The film has drawn comparisons to the works of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers, with critics praising its compelling characters and sharp dialogue.

The film premiered at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in March 2023, where it received positive reviews for its storytelling and performances.

Americana promises a thrilling ride through the complexities of ambition and morality in modern America. With its star-studded cast and gripping storyline, it’s poised to be a standout film of the summer.
