After decades in development, Stephen King’s dystopian novel The Long Walk is finally making its way to the big screen. Lionsgate has unveiled the first official trailer for the film, directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games series), offering a chilling glimpse into this harrowing tale of endurance and survival.
A Deadly Contest in a Dystopian Future
Set in a future America governed by a totalitarian regime, The Long Walk centers on an annual event where 100 teenage boys must maintain a continuous walking pace of at least 3 miles per hour. Falling below this speed results in three warnings; a fourth leads to immediate execution. The last boy remaining wins a prize of his choosing. The story follows 16-year-old Ray Garraty, portrayed by Cooper Hoffman, as he navigates the physical and psychological challenges of the competition.
The trailer showcases the brutal reality of the contest, highlighting the constant surveillance by soldiers led by the enigmatic Major, played by Mark Hamill. As the boys push their limits, themes of camaraderie, desperation, and the human will to survive come to the forefront.
Star-Studded Cast
Joining Hoffman and Hamill are David Jonsson as Peter McVries, Charlie Plummer as Gary Barkovitch, Judy Greer as Mrs. Garraty, and a talented ensemble including Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Jordan Gonzalez, and Joshua Odjick.
The screenplay, adapted by J.T. Mollner, brings King’s intense narrative to life, while director Francis Lawrence’s experience with dystopian themes adds depth to the film’s atmosphere. The musical score is composed by Jeremiah Fraites, known for his work with The Lumineers, adding an emotional layer to the story.
The Long Walk is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 12, 2025, distributed by Lionsgate. Fans of Stephen King and dystopian thrillers alike can anticipate a film that delves deep into the human psyche and the extremes of endurance.
