Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit Spaceballs 2, premiering in theaters in 2027, with a teaser trailer that’s already generating waves of nostalgia and excitement.
The teaser opens with a cheeky homage to the original Spaceballs crawl, mockingly cataloging decades of blockbuster spin-offs — from Star Wars expansions to Marvel sequels and epic sagas like Avatar and Dune. Mel Brooks drops in, quipping:
“After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie.”
It dubs itself a “Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film”, poking fun at Hollywood’s current content frenzy.
Cast
Fans will be thrilled to see the return of Mel Brooks as Yogurt, his sweet-and-sour parody of Yoda (he also played President Skroob). Other familiar faces reprising their roles:
- Rick Moranis returns as Dark Helmet
- Bill Pullman is back as Lone Starr
- Daphne Zuniga again plays Princess Vespa
Joining the comedic crew are Josh Gad, who also co-wrote the script, Keke Palmer, and Lewis Pullman (Bill Pullman’s son).
Creative Team
Mel Brooks is producing the film, Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) is set to direct, and Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez (known for Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem) are writing.
Spaceballs 2 is scheduled for release in 2027, aligning with the 40th anniversary of the original.
This long-gestating sequel looks to recapture the irreverent humor of the original while updating its parody for today’s blockbuster-obsessed audience. With Mel Brooks back at the helm—and a stellar cast both old and new—this spoof sequel is shaping up to be a must-watch in 2027.
