Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ Reboot Promises a Fresh, Frightening Take on the Classic Sci-Fi Series

Acclaimed director Ryan Coogler, known for his work on Black Panther and Creed, and his massive new vampire thriller Sinners, is set to breathe new life into the iconic sci-fi series The X-Files. Initially announced in 2023 by original series creator Chris Carter, the reboot had seen little progress until Coogler recently shared updates on The Last Podcast on the Left. He expressed enthusiasm about the series’ development, promising some “really scary” episodes aimed at both longtime fans and new viewers.

Coogler aims to reimagine The X-Files for today’s audience, focusing on diverse storytelling and contemporary themes. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the director has hinted at episodes that will be “really f***ing scary,” suggesting a return to the show’s horror roots.

Gillian Anderson, who portrayed FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the original series, has expressed openness to participating in the reboot. In a 2024 interview, she praised Coogler as “a bit of a genius” and stated, “I’m not saying no” to the possibility of returning, adding, “Maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”

Although not directly involved in the reboot, original creator Chris Carter has given Coogler his blessing. After discussing Coogler’s ideas, Carter remarked, “Those sound like good ideas,” acknowledging the challenges ahead but expressing confidence in Coogler’s vision.

While no official release date has been announced, Coogler’s commitment to the project and the involvement of key figures from the original series suggest that the reboot is on a promising path. Fans of The X-Files can look forward to a fresh take that honors the legacy of the original while exploring new narratives for a contemporary audience.
