The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the addition of a new Oscar category: Best Stunt Design, set to debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028. This landmark decision acknowledges the critical role of stunt professionals in filmmaking and follows years of advocacy from industry insiders.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang emphasized the significance of this addition, stating, “Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking. We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”
The push for recognition gained momentum with the release of The Fall Guy in 2024, directed by former stuntman David Leitch. Leitch, along with stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara, actively campaigned for the inclusion of a stunt category, highlighting the artistry and complexity involved in stunt work. O’Hara remarked, “To be seen by the film community as stunt designers hopefully brings more light to what we really do.”
Actors like Ryan Gosling also played a role in advocating for the category. During the 2024 Oscars, Gosling and co-star Emily Blunt presented a tribute to stunt performers, showcasing the evolution and impact of stunts in cinema.
While specific eligibility criteria for the Best Stunt Design award will be detailed closer to its 2028 debut, the Academy’s decision marks a significant step toward recognizing the dedication and creativity of stunt professionals.
