It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, a documentary about the late musician that premiered at a recent Sundance Film Festival now has its release date. As the film’s distributor Magnolia Pictures announced, the film will open in U.S. theaters on August 8th, followed by its release on HBO and HBO Max this winter.
Directed by Amy Berg, the documentary looks back at the life of the beloved and influential rock musician through never-before-seen footage from Buckley’s personal archives. It also features intimate interviews with his mother, Mary Guibert; former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser; former bandmates Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred; and contemporaries including Ben Harper and Aimee Mann.
“I’ve spent practically my entire career trying to make this film, which takes a very intimate look at one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time,” Berg said in a press statement. “I’m so excited Magnolia and HBO have come on board to share this film with the world and give old fans and new audiences a chance to experience Jeff from this unique vantage point. I couldn’t imagine a better team to roll this into the world!”
Buckley was only 30 years old when he died in an accidental drowning in Memphis’ Wolf River in May 1997. Though he only released one studio album during his lifetime, 1994’s Grace, it is widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time and contains one of the most definitive versions of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
