London’s Prince Charles Cinema is Hosting ‘Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair’ featuring Robert Eggers

London’s Prince Charles Cinema is set to immerse audiences in a curated selection of somber and thought-provoking films during its upcoming event, Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair, running from June 15 to June 21, 2025. Co-presented with the American Cinematheque, this week-long festival features a lineup of cinematic works that delve into themes of despair, existential crises, and societal decay.

Highlights of the Festival

The festival opens on Sunday, June 15, with Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun (2022), a poignant exploration of memory and loss. This is followed by Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting (1996), a raw depiction of addiction and youth disillusionment, and William Friedkin’s Sorcerer (1977), a tense thriller about men on a perilous mission.

On Monday, June 16, the schedule includes Castration Movie Anthology I: Traps (2024), a complex narrative on gender identity, and F.W. Murnau’s silent classic The Last Laugh (1924). The day concludes with Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986), offering a chilling look into the mind of a murderer.

Wednesday, June 18, features Alfonso Cuarón’s dystopian Children of Men (2006), the animated nuclear war tale When the Wind Blows (1986), and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood (2007), a study of ambition and moral decay. The day ends with the harrowing Threads (1984), depicting the aftermath of nuclear war.

The festival concludes on Saturday, June 21, with Mike Leigh’s Naked (1993), featuring a Q&A with the director, and Andrzej Żuławski’s The Devil (1972), introduced by filmmaker Robert Eggers.

Special Appearances and Screenings

Director Mike Leigh will be present for Q&A sessions following screenings of his films Bleak Moments and Naked. Additionally, director Robert Eggers will introduce The Devil, providing insights into the film’s themes and production.

Tickets for Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair are now available for purchase by the general public. Film enthusiasts are encouraged to secure their seats early, as some screenings are expected to sell out.
